05 Jun This Weekend at the Frog Spot | Saturday 6/6 & Sunday 6/7
The Bands that Rocked the Fandango
Last October the FoLAR Fandango was blown away by the talents of musicians from Tone in Georgia, Sticks and Sacks Bagpipe & Drum Corps, and Vista Point. They even backed up Mayor Garcetti while he preformed an original birthday song for FoLAR President Lewis MacAdams. Now they’re coming back to The Frog Spot.
Yoga’s back at The Frog Spot for the first time in 2015! This season we’re keeping active with new programs to keep you in motion. Kicking off this Sunday we’re partnering with the community and REI to provide free classes from yoga to bike maintenance. This Sunday we’re also starting up our summer education series so everyone can learn about the past, present, and future of our River.
It’s no stretch to say you can’t miss this.
Saturday June 6th
11 am | LA River Nature Walk

Vista Point
This band, from Santa Clarita, is comprised of Jake Minter on bass, Diego Hodge on guitar, Chase Wells on hand percussion and “noise specialties”, Wil Splinter on drums and bells, and Richard on guitar and vocals.
Taking cues from the likes of Neil Young, Conor Oberst, and The Smashing Pumpkins, Vista Point tells stories; stories that make the listener think of their first true love or the summer they wish they could remember.
Tone in Georgia
Tone in Georgia is a collective of musicians from the Antelope Valley, a sprawling California desert town most known as being a significant contributor to America’s military-industrial complex.
Indeed, Captain Beefheart has history here, having attended the same highschool as Frank Zappa. The A.V. is also the home of Edwards Air Force Base, where Chuck Yeager became the first human to break the sound barrier. From these roots emerges Tone In Georgia.”

Sticks and Sacks Bagpipe and Drum Corps
Sticks and Sacks Bagpipe & Drum Corps is a force to be reckoned with. Established on St. Paddy’s day 2013, this Palmdale band brings together a sound that is unlike any other.
With blistering drumbeats, howling bagpipes, and thumping bass guitar, the band not only packs the dance floor, but consistently brings grown men to tears with their renditions of such traditional tunes as The Bluebells of Scotland, I Want It That Way, and Blitzkrieg Bop.
Sunday June 7th
9 am | Community Yoga
Local author and writer Anne Marie Ruff is lending her yoga talents to lead our Community Yoga class. The class is supported by donations which will go to support Dorris Place Elementary. Please remember to bring your own yoga mat.
Anne Marie is working with children from Dorris Place Elementary to foster their talents as writers. Together the students published a book – Mingling Magic Along the River – which is available from Anne Marie for $10. Proceeds will be used to purchase new books for the school library.
You can also support Anne Marie’s work with the students of Dorris Place Elementary on Kickstarter.

12 – 2 pm | Sunday Explorations
Join FoLAR’s education team for their weekly educational series at the Frog Spot. We will cover three monthly themes: the Past, Present and Future of the river, through June, July, and August, respectively. Each Sunday we will discuss a new topic related to the theme of that month. Following our discussion, join us for an activity down in the channel at 1 pm: beautifying, cleaning up, or taking a nature walk. Be sure to keep coming back each week for exciting, new topics and engaging activities!
Our first session is on the Gabrielino-Tongva Tribe of Native Americans and their historical relationship with the River. Through hands on activities, we will learn how the native people utilized the LA River as a source of life and learn how to speak a few Tongva words.
