01 Mar The Tragic Loss of Elias Gonzalez
By Chris Fleming, Communications Manager
Update: The GoFundMe supporting the family is closed. Thank you to everyone who donated.
At Friends of the LA River we were heartbroken to hear the news that the body of Elias Rodriguez was discovered on an island in the Los Angeles River. The thoughts and sympathy of all of us are with his family and loved ones.
The loss for Elias’ family is unimaginable. Please consider supporting his family in their time of need. A GoFundMe page has been set up to benefit Elias’ mother Pahola Mascorro. Please take a moment and donate in honor of Elias Rodriguez.

In this heartbreaking moment, we want to remind all Angelenos our River and her tributaries – though low flow and safe much of the time – are still a wild force of nature, especially during storm season. The best way to stay safe is to stay out of the River if there is any rain or chance of rain.
To help Angelenos visit their River safely, FOLAR offers tips and guidelines at folar.org/safety.
A candlelight vigil for Elias is planned for Friday, March 3rd, at 7 p.m. at Cesar E. Chavez Learning Academies. The vigil will mark the path he would have taken from school to Pacoima Wash.
