23 May See the LA River Coming Back to Life on June 3
GRAND OPENING AND DEDICATION
Zev Yaroslavsky L.A. River Greenway Trail
Why Native Habitat is Vital to the L.A. River – see how on the updated LA River webpage!

Do you shop for groceries in the same place you create your home – or where you went on your first date?
Of course not! And neither do native birds, butterflies, insects and wildlife – who need a diversity of places in order to survive – just the way we do. Specific groups of plants provide food, while others offer shelter, nesting sites – and places to meet that all-important mate!
Bringing Nature Back to the L.A. River
Along this stretch of the L.A. River, Community Conservation Solutions (CCS) has restored a complex of native habitats in a first-of-its-kind approach, using an ecosystem design that replicates the plant communities seen in the Valley over 100 years ago.
We planted over 3,000 native trees, shrubs, grasses and flowering plants to create a natural oasis that brings life back to the L.A. River – and sets a precedent for restoration along urban rivers throughout Los Angeles County. We are very grateful for the expertise of Habitat Restoration Ecologist Margot Griswold at Land IQ, Los Angeles Audubon and Nakae and Associates, and the landscape design by Mia Lehrer and Associates.
And it’s good for the climate, too! Besides being beautiful and healthy for birds and other wildlife, the L.A. River Greenway Trail’s native trees and plants – which grow both tall and wide, have long life-spans, and keep reproducing – will store a lot of carbon, too. This will help reduce greenhouse gases, clean up our air – and provide much-needed shade to cool the city. When fully grown, this part of the L.A. River will store at least 20,000 pounds of carbon per year!

See how native habitat restoration makes magic happen!
Come see the restored habitat yourself! See you on the River on June 3rd.
