07 Mar LA River Reader – March 2017
Dear River Friends,
Earth Day 2017 is on the horizon and our environment has never needed more stewardship, awareness, and action. The month of April and the days leading up to Earth Day gives us all a moment to reflect and take action – think globally, act locally. In that spirit I am calling on you to join the 28th Annual Great LA River Clean Up: La Gran Limpieza! If you love our River, our Oceans or just feel like spending the day outdoors doing some good, I encourage you to sign up today at folar.org/cleanup!

The River’s future is drawing near! LA City Council and Mayor Eric Garcetti took a historic step forward in our fight to bring the LA River back to life. After years of planning and months of negotiation, the 41-acre G2 parcel – the “crown jewel” of the LA River – was bought by the City of Los Angeles and closed escrow on March 3rd!
Today is election day in Los Angeles – make sure to get to the polls! The LA River isn’t always on the ballot but it’s always the time to be inspired by the River and vote to make a better, greener, and more beautiful Los Angeles.

At Friends of the LA River we were heartbroken to hear the news that the body of Elias Rodriguez was discovered on an island in the Los Angeles River. The thoughts and sympathy of all of us are with his family and loved ones.
The loss for Elias’ family is unimaginable. Thank you to everyone who donated to the GoFundMe Campaign benefiting Elias’ mother Pahola Mascorro.
In this heartbreaking moment, we want to remind all Angelenos our River and her tributaries – though low flow and safe much of the time – are still a wild force of nature, especially during storm season. The best way to stay safe is to stay out of the River if there is any rain or chance of rain.
