07 Feb LA River Reader – February 2017
We’re gearing up for the return of America’s largest urban river clean up – our very own Great Los Angeles River CleanUp: La Gran Limpieza! 2016 was another record-breaking year – bringing together 9,000 volunteers to remove 70 tons of trash. Be a part of Los Angeles River history as we set the record again this year.
CleanUp 2017 is coming soon – sponsorships are available and registration opens soon at folar.org/CleanUp.
You’re part of the next generation of FoLAR and we need your help! We have an opening for a part-time Policy Associate as well as internships in Policy, Communications, and Operations and Management. This is your chance to join Team LA River!

We’re also searching for skilled volunteers and pro-bono professional support to keep up the momentum toward a healthier, greener, and more accessible River. Our current greatest need is for a creative graphic designer who can help us craft expressive designs that share our vision for the LA River.
If you’re interested in signing up with Team LA River as a volunteer or intern please email contact@folar.org.
A Historic Step Forward
By Stephen Mejia-Carranza, Policy and Advocacy Manager
The River’s future is drawing near! On January 27, the LA City Council and Mayor Eric Garcetti took a historic step forward in our fight to bring the LA River back to life. After years of planning and months of negotiation, the 41-acre G2 parcel – the “crown jewel” of the LA River – was bought by the City of Los Angeles.

Each month the Los Angeles River Rover will be at a different location on or near the River. We invite visitors of all ages to stop by for family-friendly activities, nature walks and updates on regional and site-specific issues affecting the Los Angeles River.

We are almost one incredibly eventful month into 2017. Like so many of you, the inauguration filled me with the same sense of surreal disbelief as the election itself; like an alien dystopian aftershock.
While we brace for new anti-environment philosophy at the federal level, we can find solace in the strength, passion and leadership here in Los Angeles and on our River.

After nearly a year since the grand opening of our Lower River office we’ve got some exciting news – the Conservation Corps of Long Beach has invited us to move our Lower River office into their space! This exciting development marks the very reason we established the Lower River office – to expand our commitment and ties to the Lower River. We’re thrilled to explore a deeper and more powerful partnership with our new hosts.
Come visit us in the new Lower River office after we move in on February 15th at 340 Nieto Avenue Long Beach, CA 90803
