01 Apr Kanye West Partners with FoLAR
Friends of the Los Angeles River is pleased to announce that visionary artist and designer Kanye West will bring his world-renowned talents to the Los Angeles River. In collaboration with FoLAR, the City of Los Angeles, and the US Army Corps of Engineers West and his creative company DONDA, will craft a transformative vision for the restoration of the G2 Parcel in Taylor Yard. To celebrate the partnership Kanye toured the Glendale Narrows by kayak with FoLAR staff.
“Kanye is the 21st Century’s renaissance man,” said FoLAR President Lewis MacAdams “He has been deeply concerned with water and flood issues since Hurricane Katrina.” West is famous for his wide-ranging talents and is eager to take on a new challenge saying: “I conquered music, I conquered fashion, I’m conquering the River. Humbly, I would say that by 50 percent I am more influential than Frederick Law Olmstead, the Apostle Paul, and Teddy Roosevelt. I’m 50 percent more influential than any other human being. This is going to be next level infrastructure cultural art. It’s artfrastructre now.”
Kanye & DONDA are reviewing plans and data for the G2 Parcel, Alternative 20 – a plan to restore 11 miles of LA River habitat, and the City of Los Angeles LA River Master Plan. West and his team are confident that they will soon be leading experts and will create the world’s finest riverfront park. “There’s nothing I really wanted to do in life that I wasn’t able to master. That’s my skill. I’m not really specifically talented at anything except for the ability to learn. That’s what I do. That’s what I’m here for,” said West.
The existing plans for the G2 Parcel leave West wide latitude in how to transform the space to create habitat, green spaces, and parkland. “We’re committed to working with the community to create a space that belongs in this neighborhood,” said FoLAR Vice President Shelly Backlar. West added “My greatest pain in life is that I will never be able to see myself perform live. When I make this park I can come like everybody else to admire my work.”
West will also serve as a public ambassador for the Los Angeles River and the G2 project helping to raise public support and financial backing. He plans to leverage his massive social media following to raise capital by tweeting an appeal to Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg. “Mark Zuckerberg will invest one billion dollars into my LA River ideas. I know I can make the world a better place starting at G2,” said West.
West’s view of the River is simple: “I’ll let the other rivers keep flowing but LA has one of the best rivers of all time, of all time.”
Happy April Fool’s day.
