Friends of the Los Angeles River, along with Frogtown resident and wildlife photographer Grove Pashley, as well as Rebecca Dmytryk of Humane Wildlife Control jumped at the opportunity to help rescue baby ducklings that were landlocked in a subterranean pool in Silver Lake. Friends of the Los Angeles River (FoLAR), got the phone call early afternoon on Monday, by Silver Lake resident Erica. By late Tuesday afternoon, Erica had two licensed wildlife experts provided by Humane Wildlife Control, Grove Pashley, and FoLAR staff on hand to help with the safe returning of the ducklings to the LA River. (This was done under close supervision and necessary permits)
It all begun when Erica and her husband David, started to notice (the mom and dad ducks) who they called “Mallory and Drake” hanging around their pool starting back in February. They’d shoo them off but they just kept returning. Even their dog did not scare them off. Erica then Googled what that meant and learned that they were probably planning to nest in their yard, so they searched every square inch and inside every pot they had but found no evidence of a duck nest. They also read that if they filled their pool with animal shaped inflatable floats, the ducks would be scared off, but Drake and Mallory never were bothered by any of this!
“It’s incredible how all of this unrolled. Because of your organization, Humane Wildlife Control phoned me. I had called many other places that told me over 1000 cases like this happen every year.” Today the baby Mallard ducklings have been returned to the LA River in Frogtown, where Grove Pashley hopes to keep a close eye on them. Erica will visit the ducks whenever possible and wants to get involved with (FoLAR) and our efforts. As for us Friends of the Los Angeles River, we’re just glad to help rehabilitate native wide life back into the Los Angeles River. Thank you all.
