Yesterday afternoon at around 2pm a sewer pipe in Boyle Heights collapsed, releasing at least 1.5 million gallons of sewage that overflowed into the Los Angeles River before the leak could be stopped at 10pm. Significant amounts of sewage were diverted into the Los Angeles River, with some estimates suggesting that as much as two million gallons might have spilled. The overflowed sewage headed down the Los Angeles River towards its mouth in Long Beach.
All coastal beaches in Long Beach have been closed and remain off limits to swimmers and surfers. Puddles of water near the spill should also be avoided. Please exercise caution in avoiding the waters of these beaches as the City of Long Beach conducts testing to determine the safety of coastal waters.
