Hello River Friend, We have watched with heavy hearts as swaths of the Southeast and Northwest have been devastated by unprecedented hurricane and wildfire damage. Right here in Los Angeles the La Tuna fire was the largest our city has ever had to combat. Local and national disaster has produced innumerable stories of heroism, and our country has been galvanized to come together in the name of charity to care for those impacted. But make no mistake – we have gained a significant reminder of the urgency to build resiliency to climate events in our communities. Our Los Angeles River presents our city and region with a primary opportunity to ensure we are both storm resilient and that we build equity in our park-poor communities. The Friends of the Los Angeles River have been hard at work advocating and advancing our opportunities to invest in the River as a way to improve the quality of lives and protect the security of local households. Together – with you – we are strengthening our community to withstand the impacts of climate change by building a future for the Los Angeles River that features parks, floodplains, bioswales, natural habitat, and permeable surfaces. I have so much more to say on this subject – so I ask you to read my full message on our folar.org website. READ MORE. |
This October we are producing two consecutive weekends of events that ensure all members of our River community can participate and attend. On October 7th we are hosting a fundraising Gala at Marsh Park and honoring Lewis along with other River leaders, including President Pro Tem Kevin de Leon. We’re following up that star-studded event with a concert with world music legends Ozomatli on October 14th. We’re so excited to collaborate with them for a benefit concert that will help FoLAR continue to build a community of River stewards. More information on both NOCHES DEL RIO available on our website, where you can also purchase tickets for either or both events. In times like these when we wonder how to take meaningful action for the benefit of the health of our planet I implore you to join me and the Friends of the Los Angeles River where you can make the biggest impact locally. Our Los Angeles River presents the perfect opportunity in its challenge to all of us to imagine how environmental stewardship can make us both more sensitive to our local ecosystem and stronger in the face of the storm. See you on the River! |

We’re in the midst of our fall fundraising push! There is no greater friend to the Los Angeles River than FoLAR’s founder Lewis MacAdams – poet, teacher, activist, and indisputably the River’s most influential advocate. To honor Lewis’ tireless work on behalf of our beloved River, we are thrilled to unveil a permanent public art sculpture at River-adjacent Marsh Park. The sculpture, created by celebrated artist Eugene Daub, will be officially unveiled at our fall Gala on October 7th! For our friends who have followed FoLAR’s journey from the beginning, for those who have been inspired into River stewardship by Lewis’ advocacy, and for those who want to help FoLAR move his legacy forward, we invite you to purchase a commemorative brick for permanent placement around the sculpture. With a commemorative brick, your support of Lewis’ historic efforts to revive the LA River will be visible to the public for generations to come. Bricks will be personalized with your name and/or choice of text. Monthly payment options available. For more information on purchasing your personalized commemorative brick, please contact Ivana Gomez del Campo at ivana@folar.org or 323-223-0585 |
