The Third Annual FoLAR Fish Derby – Off Tha’ Hook in the Glendale Narrows – is here! September 3rd is one of the the “Free” fishing days, as per U.S. Fish and Wildlife, and we’re taking you to the River! “Free” meaning, no license is needed on this day and it is open to all with programs for kids and adult anglers!
We will have Biologists at the event to weigh, measure, and catalog every fish prior to release into the LA River. The data we collect will serve as an addendum to our 2008 Fish Study. This event is also designed to educate anglers regarding urban river stewardship.
There is plenty going on during Off Tha’ Hook: the FoLAR education team will have educational activities, arts and crafts for all ages, and community booths including: Patagonia, Atwater Village Neighborhood Council, Tree People, Rubio’s Fresh Mexican Grill, Stillwater Sciences, and the Los Angeles Rod and Reel Club.
A Big THANK YOU to Los Angeles City Councilmember Gil Cedillo for providing much needed Shade and Tables for this years event.
The day will begin with a Press Conference that leads into the fishing derby for ages 18 to 80. At 10am, kids ages 6 to 17 can fish along the banks of the Los Angeles River with experienced volunteer anglers to give them pointers. This event has activities for younger children as well with an Arts & Crafts Booth sponsored by Lakeshore Learning Pasadena. Tree People will be on hand selling Rain Barrels for your home. Anglers can participate in our Fishing Contest: Weight and Rarest species!
