Friends of the LA River is proud to collaborate with Shatto Gallery on OUR RIVER: Floodplain and Future, a group exhibition that explores the Los Angeles River as a living, changing force. The show brings together artists whose work reflects the River’s ecological richness, cultural legacy, and the urgent challenges it faces today.
From sculpture to video to installation, these pieces illuminate the balance between nature and development, offering bold visions for the River’s future. This collaboration underscores our shared belief that art can inspire stewardship, spark dialogue, and strengthen the connection between people and place.
Join FoLAR at LA Compost’s Community Compost & Clean Up
Join us for a hands-on day of environmental action as we celebrate Earth Month with an event that’s all about easy, impactful climate action!
Together, we’ll clean up the bike path along the historic LA River and dive into the art of community composting. We’ll kick off the day with an orientation and healthy refreshments before splitting into two groups; one will start the clean-up while the other stays in the garden to learn about composting. Don’t worry about missing out, once the first clean-up crew returns, we’ll switch so everyone gets the full experience! We’ll wrap up with an exciting raffle featuring incredible sustainable prizes.
This event is part of LA Compost’s Earth Month Calendar and is designed to show just how simple and fun it is to take climate action. Whether you’re new to composting or a seasoned eco-enthusiast, this is your chance to take action, connect with like-minded people, and learn skills you can bring back to your community.
RSVPs are limited, so don’t wait to register. Hope to see you there!
Join Friends of LA River for our Habitat Restoration Day & Earth Month Celebration
At Habitat Restoration Day & Earth Month Celebration, 500 dedicated volunteers will join us to remove 15,000+ gallons of invasive vegetation, restoring 1 acre of land at the Reserve. Volunteers will then participate in educational activities like a nature walk, making native seed balls, and exploring informational tables from community partners. Earth Day Habitat Restore & Renew is free and open to the public and will foster both immediate and long-term health in the LA River Watershed.
With the help of the California Native Plant Society, volunteers will remove invasive mustard and learn about its impact on the ecosystem and why its removal is vital to restoring California’s native habitat. Afterward, join San Fernando Valley Audubon Society as they lead nature-filled walks around the Nature Reserve, binoculars provided!

As a special treat for our October Habitat Restoration Day, you can both volunteer and help save the monarch butterfly! The Santa Monica Mountains Fund (SAMO Fund) will be tabling at our October HRD, giving away free native milkweed plants to volunteers.
Milkweed is the only plant monarch caterpillars eat, making it essential for their survival—join the movement to protect this iconic species. (Plants will be limited and given on a first-come-first-serve basis.)

This is a makeup event after April’s rain postponement — and all of our incredible partners, activities, and hands-on restoration work will be back!
Spend the morning with us restoring native habitat in the Sepulveda Basin Wildlife Reserve connecting with your community, and celebrating the spirit of Earth Month (a little later than planned). We’ll be pulling invasive species, making seedballs, enjoying interactive educational exhibits and doing some birdwatching with the SFV Audobon Society!
If you previously registered for our April event, we ask that you register again to ensure we’re able to accomodate everyone.
