22 Sep Glendale Narrows LA River Greenway Closure
The section of the LA River Greenway downstream of the Ventura Freeway Bridge from Glendale to Shoredale Avenue in Elysian Valley was designated to be closed from 10/03/16 to 03/31/17, Monday to Friday during the hours of 7am-4pm, as part of an Army Corps flood risk management task order on the LA River. The City of Los Angeles Department of Transportation has closed the section of the LA River Greenway from Gilroy Street to Riverside Drive, Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. effective October 17, 2016 to March 15, 2017.
The Army Corps has issued a $1.47 million contract to BJD Services to strategically remove in-channel non-native vegetation, trash, and debris from the Glendale Narrows section of the LA River. Giant reed, castor bean, and palms will be specifically targeted for removal by hand cutting followed by hand application of herbicide. This task order should be completed prior to the start of nesting season in March, but follow-up treatments will occur on a monthly basis year-round.
Although this is an in-channel removal project, the LA River Greenway will be closed during this period to accommodate the vehicles, workers, and equipment part of this effort.
