Unbeknownst to Doane and the other noncoms, the commanding general at Yorktown took the threat seriously enough to dispatch a small army to surround the camp of the California Hundred shortly after midnight. The entire complement of enlisted men was marched off to prison, while Doane and the other noncoms were confined to their tents. The investigation that followed exposed the entire hoax, and the men were eventually released; but the gulf of distrust grew between the officers and enlisted men in Company A.
