If not, the action is repeated for any subsequent stops. 8 shows the various protective and safety devices the passenger does not see, but which are required to qualify an elevator as code compliant. These consist of a variety of mechanical and electrical devices located in the machine room, in the hoistway, on the car, and in the pit. Overspeed in the down direction is monitored by the governor, which cuts off power if a certain speed is exceeded and causes the mechanical safety device located on the car frame to actuate and lock the car to the guide rails if the speed continues to increase.

In many buildings, it is desired to have doors 8 ft (2400 mm) or higher. With high doors, car position indicators should be of the digital type and placed over each car operating panel so they are visible from any location within the car. The readout should be distinct, with sufficient illumination, so that the car lighting does not overwhelm the indications. In many buildings, especially hotels and hospitals, in which the usual passenger may not be accustomed to riding in elevators, the floor designation may be helpfully placed on the jamb of the hoistway door so it may be seen when the door opens.

The first essential step in elevatoring is pedestrian planning, that is, determining how many people will require transportation, what the peak traffic will be, and how it will occur—all up, up with partially down traffic, or equally up and down simultaneously. 19.
