56 Wesley had done what the Cambridge Apostles and the Oxford Tractarians would do in the nineteenth century. Since the existing curriculum did not offer enough in divinity, they set out to study it on their own and established a separate society within the university to do so. Like these later groups, the Oxford Methodists were not trying to reform the entire university; instead, they sought to educate each other. Georgian Oxford was simply not ready for such a club. If they had merely gone drinking and hunting, allowances could have been made for them.
