Twice a day we had to climb a steep slope to reach the set, an Arab village the crew had constructed. I thought it remarkable what a motion picture company can do with a patch of desert. They had hundreds of people to feed and house. We were almost like a little city sprung up overnight, living at the foot of the hill in barracks that were temporary. Donkeys were used for loading and hauling equipment. And the presence of the camels, along with our isolation, encouraged the feeling that we could just as well have been in North Africa.
