The combination of a fogging mask, a leaking buoyancy compensation device (BCD) that creates buoyancy problems, and an entanglement may be more than a diver can handle, taking him from calm but annoyed to panicked and in trouble in a heartbeat. Simply caring for dive gear—your life-support equipment—is the surest way to avoid problems. If equipment problems do occur, you need to be prepared and ready to take care of yourself or to assist a buddy in distress. Identifying and resolving a problem before it results in a more serious situation can turn a potential disaster into a simple aborted dive with no major consequences.

Surfboard or rescue board. If you need to swim out to a diver on the surface, a rescue board will give you stability and a place to provide care. • Rescue float. When a diver is in trouble on the surface, helping him become positively buoyant on the surface may be all it takes to enable him to regain control. • Rope or line. There are many different uses for lines on a boat and in a rescue. You may need to use a rope or line to search underwater for a missing diver, or to pull a diver to the boat.

1. Assess responsiveness. If the diver is unresponsive, immediately activate your emergency plan. Call for emergency medical services. 2. Open the airway and check for breathing. 3. If the diver is not breathing normally, deliver 2 rescue breaths. 4. Begin CPR. Immediately deliver 30 compressions followed by 2 breaths. Provide emergency oxygen, if available, at the highest possible concentration using the most suitable delivery device. From D. Orr and E. Douglas, 2007, Scuba Diving Safety (Champaign, IL: Human Kinetics).
