While it is hard to believe that any librarian would deliberately discourage anyone from reading or make them feel that their choice of material was less than acceptable, a thoughtless remark, a raised eyebrow, or a dismissive gesture can have the same effect. Effective readers' advisory service, then, is based on three things: knowing the literature, knowing the reader, and putting them in contact with each other. How this is most effectively accomplished is up to the individual librarian and is largely dependent upon the library, its staff, and its clientele.

For example, Library Journal has a quarterly column devoted exclusively to romance reviews, USA Today is reviewing romances more often, Publishers Weekly is making an attempt to use people who understand the genre as romance reviewers and Booklist is beginning to include some romances in its reviews. In addition, several newspapers around the country have added romance review columns on a regular basis.

In addition, over the years a number of romance-related periodicals have sprung up. Some of the more important are Romantic Times, a periodical that provides reviews, biographical sketches, industry news, and other information for the romance reader; Affaire de Coeur, a similar publication but not as comprehensive as RT; Rendezvous, one of the more critical review-only publications; Heartland Critiques, a newsletter that focuses only on reviews; and The Gothic Journal, a specialized publication that features reviews of Gothics and Romantic Suspense.
