Magnesium sulfate is the standard treatment for preeclampsia. However, magnesium's anti-hypertensive effects remain poorly understood. Magnesium acts as a vasodilator, an action customarily attributed to its ability to antagonize calcium entry into vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC).
