Difficult to tell. (Sarah, post-compulsory manager) We have suggested elsewhere (Drake & Heath, 2008) that the culture of research within an organisation may be a key element in the success of the doctoral researcher, and so it follows that researchers who are lecturers in higher education might expect to have a more supportive institutional culture of research-based practice than their school-based peers. However, this generalised view omits several significant points, not least of which is the tension between research and teaching for faculty in departments of education in higher education.

Science currently is enthralled by quantum theory and string theory, and this shift to a theoretical perspective on the universe has to some extent separated science from technology. Thomas Kuhn (1970) famously questioned the objectivity of scientific method, placing the science that is selected for investigation (as opposed to the potential science that is not), the way that it is conducted and what happens to train scientists to conduct research, into a framework that is totally contingent on the prevailing scientific culture, or paradigm, of the moment.

Objectivity is unattainable even in this domain which it has served for so long. Eraut (2003) also disengages science 38 Approaching grounded methodology from positivist objectivity, according scientific status simply to work that appears in print. Whilst located in the postmodern, Lather is sympathetic to science and scientific knowledge, which, by presenting clearly the problems of scientific research, she is able to show is also consistent with a postmodern paradigm. Thus she is able to encompass concepts of rigour and validity, and suggest what they may look like in the light of ‘anti-foundational discourse theory’.
