One cannot predict that all the behaviour of a neurotic person will manifest neurosis, nor that symptoms will occur all the time. Nor can one assume that improvement from neurotic symptoms will be permanent or sustained. The nature of neurotic presentation is not consistent either. Although phobic neurosis or depersonalisation syndrome may appear to be separate conditions they may occur at different times in the 20 Neurosis in Society same individual, or they may occur together. Abnormality of personality also predisposes to neurosis. The history of the concept of personality disorder is extremely confused, but there are two elements of personality which are emphasised to a greater or lesser extent in the different theories.
