Downstairs in the large Common Room. Most of us in the library were interested in these refreshments. But when Professor Hardy was there, we got to know that as soon as the bell tinkled, we had better lean well over our desks to hold down our papers, for like a flash Professor Hardy would streak by and create a vacuum behind him that would suck everything right off your desk. By the time we would get downstairs to the Common Room, we would find Professor Hardy standing very disconsolately in a corner of the room.
We might, however, take the space to comment briefly on a few of the more interesting ones. Postage Stamps Some time ago I had a student from Norway enrolled in my Differential Equations course. Chatting with him one day I learned that his father worked for the Norwegian Postal Service. I asked the student if his father could get me specimens of the postage stamps that Norway had issued honoring that countrys greatest mathematician, Niels Abel. The father graciously obliged, and I received samples of all the Abel stamps.
Einstein to or from the university. One 30 day, with the rain lightly misting down, I called on Dr. Einstein at his home to accompany him to Fine Hall. During the walk to the university, the rain managed to batten down some of this considerable mane over his forehead. We proceeded to his office in Fine Hall, discussing something, and he let his hair dry in its annoying position. Bothered by the hair, he would every now and then swipe at it with his hand in an effort to brush it up, but it only fell back over his forehead.
