This '"abnormal" system' could be that of Sade, and also the undoing Bataille adds to Sade. Bataille uses heterology and heterogeneity to provide an unstable systemic logic, which brings together, without homogenizing, the multiple sources in his theory. It is not enough to state that Bataille is against systems - he is against them in a way that undoes, rather than ignores, the logic of systems. 13 Notes 1. See also Inner Experience, on the intellectual community constructed with other writers (OCV, 22-42, and 117-81).

For Bataille, philosophy must go to its limit, and in this light Sade attains a limit systematically, in the same way as Hegel seeks to attain a conceptualization of final, perfected Being in self-consciousness. Bataille picks up not only on the extreme nature of Sade's writing, but on how this fits with a rigorous, tortuous system. Everyone 'knows' about Sade's works, and that they consist of catalogues of brutality - leading to the contemporary use of the word 'sadism'. At another level, he is taken to be an advocate of (sexual) liberation, and will help free us from our neuroses.

There are several reasons to pause on this statement. Firstly, the 'unlimited assemblage' is the whole which does not seek to be completion - it knows it cannot everfinishits thought. The 'unlimited' aspect also refers to the necessity of rejecting all limits as to what can be thought. Paradoxically, the realization that there will be no final truth frees up thought. This is Nietzsche's message in 'Nothing is true! Everything is permitted', On The Genealogy of Morals, III, 24. Secondly, 'the 30 Georges Bataille impossible* is more than a statement of the impossibility of completion; it is also a statement that what lies at the end (which is unattainable) is that which is beyond thought, or beyond rational thought at least.
