Set Gate Pattern If a pattern is made for a gate but not attached to a pattern but only placed against it while making the mold, this pattern is called a set gate pattern. SPLIT PATTERN This is a pattern that is made in two halves split along the parting line. The two halves are held in register by pins called pattern dowels. The pattern is split to facilitate molding. See Fig. 5-7. Fig. 5-6. Gated pattern. The dowels hold the two halves of the pattern together in close accurate register, but at the same time are free enough that the two halves can be separated easily for molding.
When the pattern is removed the resulting cavity is the exact shape of the object to be cast. The pattern must be designed to be easily removed without damage to the mold. It must be accurately dimensioned and durable enoughfor the use intended. Either one time use or production runs. PATTERN MAKING Each different item we wish to cast presents unique problems and requirements. In a large foundry there is a close relationship between the pattern maker and the molder.
