It has no date, place of publication, foliation or pagination. Hereafter I call it BM. INTRODUCTION 27 2. The Biblioteca Nacional suelta contained in a volume of thirteen plays, the volume entitled Libro extravagante de comedias> catalogued R. 11781, dated Toledo 1677, without foliation or pagination. I call this BN. 3. The Boston Public Library suelta contained in a volume of eighteen plays, the volume entitled Comedias> catalogued D. l. It is undated, without place of publication, foliation or pagination.

The Boston Public Library suelta seems to be identical with those in the New York Public Library, the University of Chicago, the University of North Carolina and the University of Southern Illinois. The Biblioteca Nacional has a pseudo-Vera Tassis version, catalogued R/11352 (3), as does the University Library, Cambridge, while both have a clear relationship with the London Library copy, catalogued P. 1050 (19). None of these texts alters the conclusions which emerge from a comparison of the five texts described above.

BHS, xlviii (1971), 218-38. 19. For useful comments on the texts and on certain textual problems I am indebted to Professor E. M. Wilson, Dr. Victor Dixon, and in particular to Mr. John Alden, Keeper of Rare Books at Boston Public Library, who helped to unravel some especially difficult points concerning the Boston Public Library suelta. As far as the date of composition of Calderón's play is concerned, H. W. Hilborn puts it around 1634 in his A Chronology of the Plays of Calderôn, Toronto, 1938.
