The majority of teaching applications have undoubtedly arisen as a direct consequence of interactive terminals (or micros) that are capable of supporting educational dialogues. Three important acronyms have come to be associated with educational applications of the computer. They are: Interacting with Computers 25 CAL = Computer-Assisted Learning CML = Computer-Managed Learning CBT = Computer-Based Training CAL is the general term used to describe virtually any learning activity that is promoted by a computer or in which a computer is involved (Beech, 1983; Hudson, 1984; Barker and Yeates, 1985).

However, it could be used for many other applications where spoken messages are required. Further details of this system are presented in chapter 4. AVCAT AVCAT (an acronym for Audio Visual Computer Aided Tutor) is a multi-media training system that uses slides and audio recordings as the primary support media within a computer-based instructional workstation. In addition to the peripherals used for information presentation the workstation contains a simple keypad and some touch-sensitive screens to enable student response data to be gathered.

We have already mentioned the importance of communication software to enable the transmission of data from one computer to another and, of course, between different computer installations. The availability of software of this type makes possible the realisation of a number of different sorts of electronic mail facility. Depending upon the intent of the system, its mode of implementation, and the volume of material involved a number of variants of this concept have come into existence. Four of the more important of these are (a) simple message handling, (b) document distribution, (c) computer conferencing, and (d) telesoftware.
