One company, which decided that it would start service by using low-power transmissions in order to be first in the market place, began operations in late 1983 and ceased trading by the end of 1984. 3). However these backyard stations were owned by enthusiasts who were willing to pay several thousand dollars for terminals with antennas 2 to 4 m in diameter and who constituted only a minute fraction of the market needed to support a direct broadcasting system. DA can be particularly advantageous for stations with very small traffic loads because it is possible to gain access to any station in the system with (in the limit) a single channel and because space-segment charges can be related to the time for which a satellite channel is used. SPADE terminals are computer controlled and linked to other terminals in the system by a signalling channel. When a demand for a call arrives at an earth station the SPADE terminal: (i) Selects a pair of carrier frequencies (one for each direction of transmission) from a list of available frequencies (ii) Advises all other terminals that the pair of frequencies it has selected is in use (iii) Sets up a circuit, in co-operation with the SPADE terminal at the destination earth station, via carriers on the chosen frequencies.
