Pearl Sydenstriker was born in Hillsboro, West Virginia to parents who were Presbyterian missionaries on leave from their work in China. When Pearl was two her parents took her back with them to Chinkiang (now called Zhenjiang). The language she spoke first was Chinese. She went to school in Shanghai and to college in the United States, but the region where she grew up became the setting for a number of her novels. Pearl Sydenstriker married Dr. John L. Buck, a missionary, in 1917. They eventually settled in Nanking (today known as Nanjing) where Pearl Buck taught English on the college level for about ten years.
