I think these images show that the mental mechanisms lined up against the content of the analysis are powerful and mentally violent. There is an element of omnipotence. The patient has an invulnerable ability to reorder reality in the mind, to reverse the roles of aggressor and attacked, to generate a plausible culture that supports the innocence of the self, to subjectively change the objective world into an acceptable form. The patient, in other words, is not a slave to the truth. He may well be skilled at pulling others into collusion with the culture of self-exoneration.
Growth is ruthlessly cut down. When this is challenged by interpretation a series of reactions may occur, which appear to vindicate the concept of the death instinct, or of aggression welling up from a profound source, and not caused by abuse or the environment in any direct way. The patient, for example, may dream of obscure processes in which a person about whom they have experienced a ¯eeting feeling of tenderness is reduced in a factory to inanimate matter and sealed in a lead pipe. It then may become evident that this is the fate, too, of all interpretations in so far as they are experienced as helpful, and particularly if they are thought to be achieved through empathy rather than intellect.
In one such dream, a man ate ravenously, but the more he ate the thinner he became. Then followed a scene with a man on a toilet who exploded with rage and the walls were covered with excrement and the man put on weight. In the dream of another patient, a highly impressive machine uprooted forests. In yet another dream, a man sat in a chair and listened to another man whom he could not see. The listening man became soft and pulpy. His facial features melted and at the end of this process he was a tube containing pulped ¯esh and crushed bones.
