LA River Enthusiasts!
We Need YOU to Help us
Engage the Public
What excites YOU about the Los Angeles River? Fascinated by its geography, ecology and history? Interested in advocacy, education or stewardship? Do you kayak, fish or paint scenes from nature? No matter your interests, you will find a fulfilling volunteer opportunity as a docent with FoLAR.
Docents are needed year-round at community events and school visits and must be at least 18 years old. We’re rolling out the Los Angeles River Rover, a 38′ mobile visitor and education center, and we need LA River Enthusiasts like YOU to help us engage and educate the public. Designed to educate the curious of all ages, the River Rover’s interpretive and interactive exhibits provide an overview of the River’s past, present and potential future. As a Docent you will conduct tours inside the vehicle, answer questions, and talk with visitors about what excites you about the River.
Docents are also needed seasonally on Saturdays and Sundays at The Frog Spot, FoLAR’s outdoor visitor center located along the breathtaking Elysian Valley bike path. The Frog Spot is Friends of the Los Angeles River’s summer gateway to the L.A. River. The Frog Spot serves as a community gathering space, launch pad for River tours and trips, and an exciting performance venue. At the Frog Spot, visitors to the river can delight in a poetry reading, take a yoga class, learn about the about the river’s history and ecology, savor a cup of coffee, or see live music on Saturday nights.
Or join us for our first docent training of the year, Saturday, February 4th, from 9AM to noon at the LA River and Gardens Center. Sign up below for more details.
At the training FoLAR staff will:
- Provide an overview looking at the River’s past, present, and possible future.
- Review FoLAR’s School Education, Community Outreach and Frog Spot Programs.
- Teach hands-on activities that docents would be leading at Los Angeles River Rover Community Events, at the Frog Spot, at Schools and on River Field Trips.
Both new and returning docents are encouraged and welcome to come!
