With funding from the Metropolitan Water District and Boeing, the Friends of the Los Angeles River and the Algalita Marine Research Institute collaborated to create this 116 page resource on the Los Angeles River for watershed educators. This guide contains an L.A. River timeline, lessons on riparian wildlife and habitats, the journey of the Kola Kayak down the L.A River led by Dr. Marcus Eriksen, the impact on plastics on our rivers and oceans, as well as in-class lessons and field labs. Guides are given free of charge for teahcers who sign up for in-class presentations, tours, and River clean ups and are interested in continuing their study on the L.A. River!

FoLAR’s outdoor environmental education festival, River School Day provides hands-on educational experiences for 4th - 12th grade students along the banks of the Los Angeles River. Through a comprehensive curriculum that includes in-class presentations and River field trips, this program promotes awareness for the River’s scientific, historic and cultural significance and the need for protection and preservation of this natural resource running through the heart of our city. This half-day event gives students an opportunity to participate in a River cleanup and educational activities that teach about the connection between storm drains, the River a the ocean and the importance of healthy watershed management. Bring your students out to explore natural bottom portions of the Los Angeles River. Guided tours are approximately 2 hours and held Monday - Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Most tours begin at the Los Angeles River Center and Gardens at 570 West Avenue but various sites along the Los Angeles River are also available upon request. In-class presentations on the history, present and future of the Los Angeles River are available Monday-Friday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m upon request. This presentation takes students through a visual history of the Los Angeles River and habitat while exploring the importance of water quality, water conservation, and watershed management in protecting and preserving the L.A.
