Description: The Los Angeles River estuary at Willow Street is where the concrete ends and the freshwater of the LA River interacts with the saltwater of the Pacific Ocean. The site features trees, vegetation, and lots of birds, including very frequent great blue herons. Ascend the River levee walls at the ramp on De Forest, near 25th Way.
Special Notes: The River is accessed at this point by climbing down a riprap levee wall.
DIRECTIONS:
Bike: Take the Lario bikeway (on the LA River and Rio Hondo from El Monte to the Pacific Ocean) to Willow Street.
Transit: Take the Metro Blue Line to the Willow Station in Long Beach. Walk west on Willow about 3/4 mile (or take the Long Beach Transit line 102). Turn left on Golden, then right on 25th Way, then left on De Forest Avenue.
Driving: Exit the 710 Freeway at Willow Street in Long Beach. Go east on Willow. At the first signal, turn right onto Golden Avenue, then right again onto 25th Way. Turn left on De Forest Avenue.
Parking: Street parking on De Forest Avenue or 25th Way.
